The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine saves to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side into third place in the division, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at both ends of the field

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established strikers - had scored just one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
